Mexican Independence Day 2015 in Gastown Vancouver, British Columbia

Don`t miss out on the Mexico`s most celebrated holiday – Mexican Independence Day on the 15th of September 2015. At the Mexican Food Restaurant La Casita Gastown we will have tons of food and drink specials for you to enjoy. Drop by and bring your family and friends, co-workers and random people you just met. To make sure that you are able to get in please call us at 604 646 2444 and book a table.

The Grito de Dolores (“Cry of Dolores”) was uttered from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato in Mexico, on September 16, 1810. It is the event that marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. The “grito” was the pronunciamiento of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest. Since October 1825, the anniversary of the event is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day.

This event has since assumed an almost mythic status. Since the late 20th century, Hidalgo y Costilla’s “cry of independence” has become emblematic of Mexican independence.

Each year on the night of September 15th, at around eleven in the evening, the President of Mexico rings the bell of the National Palace in Mexico City. After the ringing of the bell, he repeats a shout of patriotism (a Grito Mexicano) based upon the “Grito de Dolores”, with the names of the important heroes of the Mexican War of Independence who were there on that very historical moment included, and ending with the threefold shout of ¡Viva México! from the balcony of the palace to the assembled crowd in the Plaza de la Constitución, or Zócalo, one of the largest public plazas in the world. After the shouting, he rings the bell again and waves the Flag of Mexico to the applause of the crowd, and is followed by the playing and mass singing of the Himno Nacional Mexicano, the national anthem, with a military band from the Mexican Armed Forces playing. This event draws up to half a million spectators from all over Mexico and tourists worldwide. On the morning of September 16, or Independence Day, the national military parade (the September 16 military parade) in honor of the holiday starts in the Zócalo and its outskirts, passes the Hidalgo Memorial and ends on the Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s main boulevard, passing the El Ángel memorial column and other places along the way.

A similar celebration occurs in cities and towns all over Mexico, and in Mexican embassies and consulates worldwide on the 15th or the 16th. The mayor (or governor, in the case of state capitals and ambassadors or consuls in the case of overseas celebrations), rings a bell and gives the traditional words, with the names of Mexican independence heroes included, ending with the threefold shout of Viva Mexico!, the bell ringing for the second time, the waving of the Mexican flag and the mass singing of the National Anthem by everyone in attendance. There are also celebrations in schools as well all over the country. In the 19th century, it became common practice for Mexican presidents in their final year in office to re-enact the Grito in Dolores Hidalgo, rather than in the National Palace. President Calderón officiated at the Grito in Dolores Hidalgo as part of the bicentennial celebrations in 2010 on the 16th of September, even though he had to do this first, to launch the national bicentennial celebrations, in the National Palace balcony on the night of the 15th. As a result, the 2012 commemoration, his last as President, was held in the National Palace balcony instead, thus becoming the third President breaking the traditional practice.

The following day, September 16 is Independence Day in Mexico and is considered a patriotic holiday, or fiesta patria (literally, Patriot Festival or Civic Festival). This day is marked by parades, patriotic programs, drum and bugle and marching band competitions, and special programs on the national and local media outlets, even concerts.

“Yummy and affordable!” says Hip-Hopkins77

We happened into La Casita on taco Tuesday. My husband and I split a salad and four tacos and we each ordered the beer special. This was probably our cheapest meal while visiting Vancouver and we really enjoyed the food. The veggie tacos were delicious! The atmosphere is fun/upbeat.

We were staying downtown and asked the bell boy where the closest Mexican restaurant was and they sent us down to gas town to La Casita. Loved it! We had a great lunch. Prices were good and the food was good.

Would I come back? - Yes!

Here is what Maggi H. says about the Mexican Restaurant La Casita Gastown:

"We didn't have just one server dedicated to us. There were over 8 staff members working the 15 tables on the top floor. 4 of which interacted with us throughout our stay. It seemed that in order to work here you either had to be either Mexican or blonde female. Just an observation.

The menu was page after page of items listed by their Mexican names, with their English descriptions underneath. I found it a little difficult to sieve through and narrow down on what I wanted. In the end my guest and I opted to slip the largest and most expensive of share platters. Which still only came to $22.

Our meal began with complimentary tortilla chips accompanied by two different dipping sauces. One of the servers delivered it to us without a word or brief description. Luckily neither of us had any food allergies or restrictions. Had it been the case, it could have been negligence. The dips were poured into little ramekins from a two liter plastic drink jug. The brown one was spicy and tasted almost meaty. And the green, I believe was made from tomatillos, with a texture that closely resembled the creaminess of sour cream. The chips were not your regular Tostitos. They were a tasty corn chip, with only the slightest hint of oil. This we ate down to the grease soaked paper towel, that lined the bottom of the wicker chip basket. And of course we had to have the Mexican beer special along with our meal.

Would I come back? - Yes. I knew I liked the place when a smile crept across my lips, as I navigated to my seat. This place was just fun to be in. Kitschy decor, upbeat beats, and amazing food. Food from a well dressed and well groomed kitchen staff, operating out of a partially opened kitchen. The dishes were great a blend of Mexican spices meets North America's love affair with deep frying and cheeses. There is so much more to the menu that I would like to try. "Armadillo Eggs" (deep fried jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese), "Flauntas" (flute shaped tacos), and authentic Mexican desserts with agave nectar and abaelita (a Mexican brand of chocolate). This long list isn't even including the giant margaritas as big as your head. There seemed to one seated at every other table. Around each rim was enough salt to season 100 bags of chips. So yes, I plan to be back.

Would I recommend it?- Yes. Did you not read about the huge fish bowl sized drinks above? Enough said. Don't deny your cravings."

We spent the weekend in Vancouver and were walking around the Gastown area if the city. Vancouver is not known for its Mexican food, but this is a great fun little restaurant. Very lively atmosphere. Food is pretty good. The vegetable chimichangas were surprisingly good. I would recommend this place if in town!! Click here to read more.

Enjoyable mexican and it's close to home.

The chips & salsas are great. They have decent specials, especially during Canucks games. Portion sizes are alright and all the trimmings are nice enough. I like the feta over the beans. Nothing has really stood out to make me go WOAH but it's been satisfying and pleasant every time.

My boyfriend really enjoyed their ultimate caesar! And their churros with whipped cream are good.

We stumbled upon La Casita on our quest for lunch. Laid back but attentive service. Not your standard Mexican plate of orange cheese. Quite the opposite! My dining partner deemed the tortilla soup the best soup he's ever had. My combo quesadilla/flauta was delicious. We all loved the duo of salsas. Yeah you don't get chips and salsa the minute you sit down, but we can live with that. We thought it was great and will definitely be back the next time we're in Vancouver.

Wonderful Food and Really Friendly Service

Review on the Mexican food restaurant La Casita Gastown by SistaGirl2010

We were just walking by this restaurant and decided to call in. We were warmly greeted and shown to a table. We were a small group so were seated upstairs. I was pleased to see that larger groups were accommodated down stairs. The service was prompt and friendly. Our attendant was able to explain different menu items to us and we were very pleased with our meals. The flavours were great and the portion sizes were generous.

Review on La Casita Gastown by heygervais

My colleague and I were looking for a place to eat in Gastown and decided to try this place after walking around the area for awhile on a rainy Sunday evening.

The initial tacos were very light and the sauces that came with them had a bit of heat, but not so much to make you uncomfortable. For dinner I had the Chicken Fajitas. Delicious! The chicken was well shredded and flavored for building my fajitas. The fixings were great. I had more than enough food and I enjoyed the meal very much. For dessert, I had the special cake, Pastel de Tres Leches. Nice and light, not too filling. All in all I was very pleased and pleasantly surprised at the bill, which I thought was quite reasonable for what we had and the location.

This is not fast food or Tex-Mex so if you are looking for a cheap version of Mexican food, this is not the place to go. You come here to eat well prepared Mexican food in the pleasant atmosphere of downtown Vancouver. I would recommend a meal there if you are from out of town and looking for a good meal in Gastown.

Review on La Casita Gastown by Shannon B.

La Casita has quickly become one of my favorite local haunts. I find myself experiencing symptoms of withdrawal when I go without their delicious flautas for more than a couple weeks. On the occasions when I ventured to try something other than my usual go-to, I left feeling sated and stoked.

The menu has a lot of variety, both in types of dishes and portion options, and the daily specials are always an awesome bonus. While some reviewers commented that their meals were overpriced in the $15-$17 price range, I have always felt that the small size of any particular dish has been more than enough food and totally wallet-friendly in the $11-$13 price range. Even my boyfriend, who regularly consumes about double the amount of food I do in a sitting, feels full from most of the small-sized meals. Although it's possible that the pitchers of lime margarita we like to indulge in also contribute significantly to our post-meal satisfaction...

Aside from the awesome food, I love going here on the regular because of the warm and sociable atmosphere. The space is cozy with great people watching and the staff are lovely and can be counted on for fast and friendly service.

Review on La Casita Gastown by Kristy H.

I've been here twice now, both times i've had great things happen and not so great things happen.

The place is always humming with people, can get pretty loud in there, so dont go if your looking for a romantic dinner for two.

Both times we have been seated downstairs, i perfer this because its cooler and not so crammed.

The margaritas are wicked. We always get lime pitchers of it, mmm goes down easy. This time I ordered a tortilla soup and shared a chick burrito with my friend. I LOVE their soup. I want to eat it everyday of my life! I dont know how they make it but its so flavourful! The burrito was very tasty too. We got it 'solo' which means without the beans and rice. It would have been too much food to get that added on. i loved my meal.

All in all, i do like this place. I will go back. My expectations are not high, which is fine, but the food and drink makes up for the service. I will only remember to go when i'm not in a rush and I have tons of time to just sit and enjoy myself.

I've been to this place like 5 times, broght some business partners here too.

A good Mexican restaurant with a variety of authentic dishes that you should deffinately try if you are in the area.
