Review on La Casita Gastown by Guillermo H

A little bit of mexico in Vancouver. The service is good, the people are very nice and friendly. And best of all, the food is authentic. From the salsas to the flautas and mole, or the real corn tortillas are just out of this world.

Review on La Casita Gastown by Shally J

We stumbled upon this place one afternoon while roaming the streets of Gastown looking for the London Drugs drugstore. Great find! The food was so fresh and amazing. We got quesadillas for my 2 little kids. It was made of corn tortillas. These were so good, that it reminded me of fresh maki ki roti (a famous Indian flat bread made of corn) that my mother made when we were having the popular Punjabi dish sarsoon da saag & maki di roti.

Anyway, besides that, we got the enchiladas and flautas, and everything was vegetarian, and just sooo good. Very flavorful. We finished everything! And were seriously debating getting another order of quesadillas for later. But didn't because we were going to leave that same night so it would have gone bad.

Review on La Casita Gastown by Amanda J

Mexican food in Vancouver is usually not enjoyable for me. Until La Casita, I hadn't found a place that even remotely resembles Mexican food. La Casita though, they've got it down. Whoever is cooking in the back knows whats up.

We started with a pitcher of margaritas, which was delicious and had just the right amount of tequila. We ordered some nachos to start - we had a craving for them since we read about Foundation's but couldn't eat there due to allergies - and they were solid. The chips were fresh flour ones, and loaded with cheese and beans. They also gave us chips and salsas -- the green one is bomb.com, let me tell you. Loved that salsa.

Our table ordered the enchilada special, chile rellenos, tortilla soup and flautas. Everything was really tasty - the chile relleno was nice and spicy, with a tasty egg batter, and full of cheese. The tortilla soup was loaded with fresh avocado, and the enchiladas were packed with flavor.

The service was really fast, and our drinks were always full. Def. planning to come back for Margarita Mondays!

Review on La Casita Gastown by Eating With Kirby

La Casita- $5 Burritos on Mondays

few blocks away from the Waterfront skytrain station

La Casita is located in Gastown, a few blocks away from the Waterfront skytrain station. Diana (foodology) told me about their '$5 Monday Burrito Specials' so we all decided to go after our meeting.

complimentary chips and salsa before our burritos

They gave us complimentary chips and salsa before our burritos came. The green salsa was mild and had a really tasty herby flavour to it. The red salsa was spicier so I didn't like that one as much.

tortilla soup and two flautas

Diana ordered Combo #2 ($11.00) which consisted of tortilla soup and two flautas (they looked like taquitos). She enjoyed the soup and when I saw how fresh and delicious it looked, I regret not getting it as well!

tender chicken sauteed with bell peppers onions

When I started eating it, it was actually really delicious! I didn't think I would enjoy a burrito with mostly chicken because it seemed too heavy but that wasn't the case here. The tender chicken was sauteed with bell peppers, onions, and then combined with melted cheese.

Combo #3 at La Casita Gastown

Combo number three @ $18.5
1 Chile Relleno & 2 Flautas with Rice & Guacamole Salad & Tortillas

The chile relleno, literally “stuffed chile”, is a dish of Mexican cuisine that originated in the city of Puebla. It consists of a roasted fresh poblano pepper (a mild chili pepper named after the city of Puebla), sometimes substituted with non-traditional Hatch chile, Anaheim, pasilla or even jalapeño chili pepper. In its earliest incarnations, it was described as a “green chile pepper stuffed with minced meat and coated with eggs”. In current cuisine, it is typically stuffed with melted cheese, such as queso Chihuahua or queso Oaxaca or picadillo meat made of diced pork, raisins and nuts, seasoned with canella; covered in an egg batter or simply corn masa flour and fried. Although it is often served in a tomato sauce, the sauces can vary. There are versions in Mexico using rehydrated dry chiles such as anchos or pasillas.

The poblano is a mild chili pepper originating in the State of Puebla, Mexico. Dried, it is called a chile ancho (“wide chile”). The ripened red poblano is significantly hotter and more flavorful than the less ripe, green poblano. While poblanos tend to have a mild flavor, occasionally and unpredictably, they can have significant heat. Different peppers from the same plant have been reported to vary substantially in heat intensity. A closely related variety is the mulato, which is darker in color, sweeter in flavor and softer in texture.

A taquito or flauta is a Mexican food dish consisting of a small rolled-up tortilla and some type of filling, usually beef or chicken. The filled tortilla is crisp-fried. Corn (maize) tortillas are generally used to make taquitos, though flour is sometimes used.

Guacamole, is an avocado-based sauce that originated with the Aztecs in Mexico. In addition to its use in modern Mexican cuisine it has also become part of American cuisine as a dip, condiment and salad ingredient. It is traditionally made by mashing ripe avocados with a molcajete (mortar and pestle) with sea salt. Some recipes call for tomato, onion, lime juice, chili, yogurt and/or additional seasonings.

Tortilla means “little torta” or “little cake” in Spanish; the Spanish word applies to several different foods eaten in various Spanish-speaking countries. The Spanish word is used in English for a more restricted range of foods, mainly a potato-based omelette originating in Spain, and for a flatbread made from corn or wheat originally made by Mesoamerican peoples.

Combo number two @ $11
Tortilla Soup & 2 Flautas or Black Bean Soup & Salad Quesadillas

Soup is a generally warm food that is made by combining ingredients such as meat and vegetables with stock, juice, water, or another liquid. Hot soups are additionally characterized by boiling solid ingredients in liquids in a pot until the flavors are extracted, forming a broth. Traditionally, soups are classified into two main groups: clear soups and thick soups. The established French classifications of clear soups are bouillon and consomme. Thick soups are classified depending upon the type of thickening agent used: purees are vegetable soups thickened with starch; bisques are made from pureed shellfish or vegetables thickened with cream; cream soups may be thickened with bechamel sauce; and veloutes are thickened with eggs, butter, and cream. Other ingredients commonly used to thicken soups and broths include rice, lentils, flour, and grains; many popular soups also include carrots and potatoes.

A taco is a traditional Mexican dish composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. A taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. A taco is generally eaten without utensils and is often accompanied by garnishes such as salsa, avocado or guacamole, cilantro, tomatoes, minced meat, onions and lettuce.

The small, shiny black turtle bean is especially popular in Latin American cuisine, though it can also be found in Cajun and Creole cuisines of south Louisiana. It is often called simply the black bean (frijol negro, zaragoza, poroto negro, caraota o habichuela negra in Spanish, and feijão preto in Portuguese), although this can cause confusion with other black beans.

A quesadilla is a flour or corn tortilla filled with a savoury mixture containing cheese and other ingredients, then folded in half to form a half-moon shape. This dish originated in Mexico, and the name is derived from the Spanish word queso (cheese).
